Reading Aspects in Synthesis

You now have two layers of detail to add to a chart reading. The aspect rules from lesson 8.1 tell you which planets are in interpretive conversation. BJ 20's placements from lesson 8.2 tell you what each planet brings to each house. This lesson puts them together.

The aspect web

A chart isn't just a list of planet placements. It is also a network. Every planet in the chart is sending out aspects to specific houses, and some of those aspects land on other planets, creating mutual conversations.

To build the aspect web, you walk each planet in the chart and identify what it aspects:

For Sun, Moon, Mercury, and Venus: only the 7th house from each one. So note where each of these four sits and which house is the 7th from that point.

For Mars: the 4th, 7th, and 8th from where it sits.

For Jupiter: the 5th, 7th, and 9th from where it sits.

For Saturn: the 3rd, 7th, and 10th from where it sits.

Then mark which of those aspect-target houses contain other natal planets. Each of those is a planet-on-planet aspect, which is interpretively heavier than a planet-on-empty-house aspect.

Why mutual aspects matter most

When two planets sit 7 houses apart, they aspect each other (since every planet has the 7th aspect). This mutual aspect is one of the strongest interpretive signals a chart can carry, because the two planets are in active conversation rather than one-sided influence.

A chart with the lagna lord and the 7th lord in mutual aspect, for example, ties identity and partnership tightly together. A chart with Jupiter and the Moon in mutual aspect (which approximates Gajakesari yoga from Module 6 lesson 3) carries a wisdom-and-mind reinforcement that shapes daily life.

Mutual aspects can produce yogas. The Raja yogas in Module 6 lesson 2 often form through mutual aspects between kendra and trikona lords. The dhana yogas in Module 6 lesson 4 often form through mutual aspects between wealth-house lords.

Aspects in the seven-statement reading

Going back to the seven-statement reading from Module 2, aspects fit into several places:

Statement 2 (the lagna lord): note any planet aspecting the lagna lord. Jupiter or Mercury aspecting the lagna lord strengthens the placement (BJ 1.19, Module 1 lesson 6). Saturn aspecting can structure or weight it. Malefic aspects pressurize it.

Statement 3 (the Moon): note any planet aspecting the Moon. From lesson 6.6, this matters for the chart's emotional structure. Jupiter aspect brings warmth. Saturn brings structure or heaviness. Mars brings intensity.

Statement 7 (the 1st, 7th, 10th lords): note any planets aspecting each of these three lords. Aspects on the lagna lord shape identity expression. Aspects on the 7th lord shape partnership texture. Aspects on the 10th lord shape career texture.

A complete example

Back to the chart from Module 2 lesson 11. Leo lagna; Sun in Leo in the 1st; Moon in Taurus in the 10th; Saturn in own sign in Aquarius in the 7th; Jupiter in own sign in Sagittarius in the 5th.

Let's walk the aspect web.

The Sun in the 1st: only the 7th aspect, so it lands on Saturn in the 7th. Sun-Saturn mutual aspect is structurally tense (they are enemies in BJ 2.16) but here both planets are in own sign, which softens the friction. The reading: identity (Sun) and committed partnership (Saturn in 7th) are in active conversation; the chart acknowledges the tension between solo expression and committed mutuality, and the strength of both planets means it integrates rather than dominates.

The Moon in the 10th: 7th aspect lands on the 4th house, which is empty. So the Moon aspects but doesn't land on a planet.

Jupiter in the 5th: 7th aspect to the 11th (empty), 5th aspect to the 9th (empty), 9th aspect to the 1st (Sun + Mercury). Jupiter aspecting the Sun and Mercury in the lagna is a strong support: the lagna lord (Sun) is benefic-aspected by Jupiter (BJ 1.19 strengthening condition is met). The chart's identity is structurally well-supported.

Saturn in the 7th: 7th aspect back to the Sun in the 1st (mutual with the Sun-Saturn mutual aspect already noted). 3rd aspect to the 9th (empty). 10th aspect to the 4th (empty). Saturn's only planet-on-planet aspect is the mutual one with the Sun.

The aspect web for this chart: the dominant pattern is Sun-Saturn mutual aspect (lagna lord and 7th lord in conversation, both in own sign), reinforced by Jupiter's 9th aspect from the 5th to the 1st. Identity and partnership are tightly linked, and Jupiter's aspect adds wisdom and grace to the integration.

This reading would have been impossible from placements alone. The aspect web is what reveals the chart's relational structure.

Try this

For your chart, walk each of the seven traditional planets and identify what it aspects (using the aspect rules from lesson 8.1). Mark which aspects land on other planets, not just empty houses. Then look at the lagna lord, the Moon, and the 7th and 10th lords specifically. Which planets are aspecting each of these four key reference points?

Write three or four sentences describing the chart's aspect web. Where are the active conversations happening? Where are the mutual aspects? The result deepens the seven-statement reading from Module 2 with one more interpretive layer.
