The craving for the other

Returns about every 18½ years. What the transit means, then what was in the news and who was born each time it passed through Libra since 1900, so you can test the teaching against the record, and against your own life.

What Rahu in Libra means

The craving for the other

Rahu
Craving, novelty, the foreign and the drive for more.
Libra
A movable air sign, ruled by Venus. Air signs talk, trade and connect. A movable sign starts things.
Comfort
In a friend's signLibra is ruled by Venus, a friend to Rahu, so Rahu is at ease here.
Rhythm
Stays about 1½ years at a time. Returns about every 18½ years. Ketu sits opposite, in Aries.

Rahu is the Moon's north node, a shadow planet that stands for craving, novelty, the foreign and the drive to have more. It moves backward through the zodiac with Ketu opposite. In Libra, a cardinal air sign ruled by Venus, Rahu's friend, the craving is for partnership, foreign alliance and a fairness that is new rather than inherited.

With Ketu in Aries, the lone warrior and the impulse to go first are what the world is releasing. The theme is relationship redefined. Alliances form across old lines. Justice is argued in new terms. The lesson is that wanting a partner is not the same as being one.

What the tradition expects

  • Alliances, diplomacy and foreign partnerships of a new kind
  • Marriage, contracts and fairness argued in public
  • Lone action and old rivalries loosening, with Ketu in Aries

How to read any transit

Three questions, in this order. They work for every planet and every sign.

  1. How comfortable is the planet here?Exalted, at home, in a friend's sign, or debilitated. Comfort sets whether the planet's themes come easily or have to be worked for.
  2. Which house is it in, for you?The same sign is a different house for every rising sign. The house says which part of life the transit touches: money, home, work, partners.
  3. What else was in the sky?A slow transit sets the backdrop. The other slow planets, and the eclipses, say what played out in front of it. No single transit explains a year.

Compare two visits

The same transit, a generation apart. Pick any two of Rahu's visits to Libra and read them against each other.

1994–95 leaned to conflict and disaster, 2012–14 to politics and society. The same transit set the backdrop both times; what played out in front of it differed.
